Pistols come in four basic sizes. The trade-off is always the same: bigger is easier to shoot and holds more, smaller is easier to carry. Pick the size that fits how you will use it most.
| Size | Barrel length | Typical 9mm capacity | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full size | About 4.5 to 5 in | 15 to 18+ | Home defense, range, duty |
| Compact | About 3.8 to 4.3 in | 12 to 15 | Carry and home, all-around |
| Subcompact | About 3 to 3.6 in | 10 to 13 | Concealed carry |
| Micro / pocket | Under 3 in | 6 to 10, often .380 | Deep concealment, backup |
Full size
A full-size pistol has a long grip and barrel. The extra weight soaks up recoil, and the long sight radius makes accurate shooting easier. A great choice for home defense and the range. See Full Size Pistols.
Compact
A slightly shorter barrel and grip that still fits the whole hand. Compacts can be carried and still shoot like a bigger gun, which is why they are the most popular size. See Compact Pistols.
Subcompact and micro
Short grips and barrels make these the easiest to conceal. They are snappier to shoot and take more practice, but the best carry gun is the one you actually carry. See Sub-Compact Pistols.
How to choose
- Mostly at home or at the range? Go full size.
- Want one pistol for everything? Go compact.
- Carrying every day in light clothing? Look at a subcompact or micro.
- Try before you buy. Grip, recoil and controls feel different in every hand.
Next step: pick a caliber in Pistol Calibers, or head back to Where to Start.
Measurements are typical ranges. Always check the specs of the model you are buying.
